Notes |
- From his Grandson (Gavin How), read at his funeral:
"For the few of you who might not know me my name is Gavin and I am Michael's Grandson. I would like to thank you all for being here on this day of reflection of Grandpas long life and it brings me countless joy that the Grandpa I knew and loved was also loved by many others. It is an honour to get to say a few words here today. However, I don't think you need me to tell you what an outstanding man Grandpa Michael was, he demonstrated that with ease, so instead I would like to tell you today what he meant to me and some of the memories I hold.
Some of my earliest and most cherished times were spent down in Lymington with Grandpa and the wider How family on a Lymo weekend. A weekend packed with food, board games and laughter, there was nowhere else I felt more at home than in Grandpas house.
Just a month ago, another of these events was taking place and it was perhaps the greatest of them all, the Guy Fawkes weekend. I awoke on the Saturday morning to the sound of Grandpa whistling and singing as if he was a man 20 years younger. I think Grandpa and I had equal excitement for what lay ahead and those few days could have not better summed up what I loved about Grandpa and the environment he created. After an action packed weekend at Lymo there was never any room for the worries and stresses of normal life. Grandpa was always appreciative of life and positive, never dwelling on the negatives.
Growing older, my life became ever more crammed with activities and commitments, I always prioritised weekends at Grandpas over anything else, often letting school work fall by the wayside while I was down there.
As I look out across at you, I cannot help but notice that many of you are of an older generation and for this I am jealous. In the 19 years that I knew Grandpa he had nothing but a positive influence on my life, and to think that some of you here knew Michael for an even longer period means you were all the more lucky than I. I know I can speak with confidence when I say that Grandpa you will be missed, I hope to embrace life with as much enthusiasm and love as you did."
