    Notes
    • From Kay Wachter's book:
Mary describes herself as having a very happy childhood, growing up as something of a "tom-boy" surrounded as she was by her four brothers. She states that she had a somewhat privileged education at an excellent girls' school but declined to go to University. Instead, upon finishing her schooling in 1938, she took a shorthand and typing course and in the spring of 1939 entered the Bank of England, doing secretarial work at the Head Office. She was there right through the "Blitz" on London during the winter of 1940-41 when they suffered severe bombing night after night. For their own safety they worked in the bank vaults three stories underground and, to avoid unnecessary traveling in extremely difficult conditions, they would work for three days and sleep on a camp bed beside their desks at night. Then they would spend two days at home. Even at home they had to spend their nights sleeping in the cellar as a precaution against the bombing. It was a hard winter and somewhere along the line under these difficult conditions, Mary caught T.B. and was sent to a sanitarium in 1941 for nine months. Three years later X-rays showed that the healing was not complete, so it was back to another sanitarium to go through the whole process again. There were no drugs to cure in those days and Mary counts herself as very lucky to be alive!
Her hobbies and interests center mainly on "my home and family":
      - Needlework.
      - Knitting - including machine knitting.
      - Membership in "Inner Wheel" (wives of Rotarians).
      - Playing the piano "very badly". Travel [especially cruising.
      - Bridge.
