    Notes
    • From Kaye Wachter's book:
Nell or Nellie, as she was called, seems to have been an adventurous person. She was known to have worked for the Potters from at least July of 1904 until July of 1915, either as a companion, governess or secretary to Mrs. Francis Squire Potter. The first reference found to this was in a small Family Register calligraphed by Frank How, in which he writes, "Nellie left home on Friday, July 29th, 1904. Sailed from Southhampon on the S.S. "Philadelphia" on Saturday July 30th. Arrived New York Saturday, Aug. 6th and reached Minneapolis on Monday [bank holiday] Aug. 8th evening." And again... "Nellie arrived from Minneapolis, with Mrs. Potter, family and friends per S.S. "St. Louis" in Plymouth on Saturday, Sept. 1905. Nellie and the party returned per S.S. "Merion", Lpool to Phila. in July 1906."
She was a sponsor for Francis Waldo How's christening on 15 Jul 1905 in St. Peter MN. Nellie travelled with the Potters between Minneapolis MN, Chicago IL and Elmira NY. They went back to England several times by steamship, always to Cambridge.
Despite family and friends trying to talk her out of making such a dangerous journey, Nell felt compelled to go back to England when WW 1 broke out. To avoid danger of German torpedoes as much as possible, in July 1915, she sailed on the D.D. "Nieuw Amsterdam" - the Holland - Amerika - Linie Rotterdam/New York. She did arrive safely!
